Silver Jubilee Celebrations at Chennai

One leg of the year long silver jubilee celebrations was held in Le Royal Meridian, Chennai with chief guests including Shri M.S. Swaminathan, chairman of MSSRF, and Shri K.S. Sripathi, Chief Secretary, Tamil Nadu. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Ramadorai, Chairman of Board of Governors of BIM. It also saw a huge turn out of BIM Alumni to celebrate the silver jubilee of their AlmaMater.

Bidding Adieu...

Oh… It’s the time of the farewell, as we near the end of the academic year. The farewell night was filled with emotions as we thanked our seniors for their support that started even before we stepped in to BIM. Its been a wonderful year filled with fun and a lot of learning giving new experiences to everyone. The seniors in return thanked us for a wonderful farewell night and how they were filled with nostalgia of their first days at BIM and every one of them remembered their most memorable moments of the last two years and everyone did not want their time at BIM to come to an end. All in all Farewell night was a testament to the strong bond between the students of both years and it also was a shining example of how everyone who has come to BIM will always associated his or her fond memories with BIM and that’s the most important reason that our Alumni also turn up years after they have left BIM.

FINANCE UTSAV

For all those people who talk in a language of the Finance with words interspersed with terms like CDO, LIBOR etc etc... This will be a post of interest, The Flagship event of the Finclub, FINANCE UTSAV just got over after filling up everyone's life with equations and equity in equal proportion. The month long event started on March 7th and was designed to enthrall, captivate, stimulate and force the students to apply their existing knowledge and also to be more equipped with financial skills.

There were a whole basket of events to test the all-round skills, YUDHVIDYA, is the main crowd puller, eagerly awaited by the the finance-inclined students, affectionately (???) called as FinFreaks by the BIM population. This was the event where teams battle over two rounds as they analyze the balance sheets of organizations and take decisions for them to maximize profit. Special lectures were also organized as a part of the event. FinGuns, a two round quiz testing both current awareness as well as reasoning skills also was conducted. Bulls and Bears tested the stock market knowledge and decision making skills of BIM Students. Chakravyuh, the online treasure hunt also saw students participating in hordes and pulling their hair out trying to connect the clues and get the answers to reach the final level.

Finclub also came with a magazine called FINZINE, with a loads of info on the world of finance which can also be a ready-reckoner of sorts for all the students.

BIM just saw the most colorful and exciting sports event of the year come to an end. We just witnessed 8 teams battle it out in our own version of IPL, BIM’s Sundararaghavan cricket tournament. Cricket always brings out the best out of students and it saw even the studious of the most studious students come out swinging their bats to hit runs. Teams from both PGP I and PGP II participated with vigor with loads of professionalism with coming up with funny team names like Zeros, Designing their own jerseys and even to the extent of naming Physios in the team roster.

All the matches saw some beautiful batting and were filled with action right till the end, students became heroes overnight with scoring crucial runs and taking catches diving in mid air. And why only boys should have fun? Girls also came in droves and had their own teams and had an unforgettable final match with both teams fighting till the last ball of the match. The overall Winners were Royal stags and the runners were Kshatriyas. All in the entire Cricket tournament was a great success with students staying till late night to catch the match action. Kudos to sportscom for conducting this event and making it a grand success.

If a firm with a highly volatile price is willing to widen its shareholders‟ base gradually, what will it issue?

These were some of the questions put forth to the participants during the preliminary quiz round of KSHAN’09, the two day quiz and equity analysis event conducted by FINCLUB of BIM. The first round saw a huge turnout of teams with creative names like, “Angels and a Demon”, 3sigma and Laymen brothers to name a few. The quiz had 38 questions grilling the participants’ knowledge in financial world. Out of the 20 odd teams that participated, 6 best teams were selected for the equity research round. Each team was given a company and asked to give a thorough analysis of their stock and requested to present their findings the next. Each team’s presentation was evaluated by a panel of judges comprising professors and experts in field of corporate finance. Out of the 6 teams, the winners were

SMASHES - Play on....

It was as if the Rain Gods decided to give Trichy a chance to see the sun after weeks of lashing rain just to watch the volleyball tournament held at BIM. It was the much awaited SMASHES '09 which was filled with nail biting moments, fun, comic moments, memorable fight-backs, and some of beautiful gameplay ever witnessed by BIMITES. It started with a great spelendour and ended with a fitting finale. As usual students formed teams with unique names with a funny touch (e.g. AMEOBA - Association of MOst Eligible BAchelors) and 12 teams fought for the title of the best vollyball team of BIM. All the matches held the audience at the edge of their seats and everyone got to witness great games after great games.

The tournament ended with a gargantuan five setter fame which stretched beyond midnight and not to add none of the audience moved an inch away from their seats, some even going to the extreme of praying for their favorite team to win. At last It was Dark knights, who came out as the best and were crowned as the champions of 09.

The annual BIM marathon was held on BIM campus last sunday and hordes of students participated with unbridled enthusiasm. The marathon started at 6 starting from the hostel gate and the route covered the BHEL campus and runners were expected to come back to hostel gate after reaching the BHEL roundabout. PK was the winner and he was presented with the medal by the hostel warden. The registration fees paid by the runners were gifted to a charity organisation.

R & S Football Tournament 09' was the first of many sporting events to come for the year 2009-2010. This tournament is held in memory of Rajrup and Sumantra of BIM25 batch.

The tournament was conducted in two games football for guys and throwball for girls. It started off with 8 teams in play, 4 each from PGP1 & PGP2. The football tournament was played on league cum knockout basis with 2 teams from each group of 4 qualifying for knockout rounds. The tournament saw several close encounters in the league phases and threw up new heroes to the limelight. But at the end of league stage 4 teams namely, the Dark Knights & Kaalais of PGP2 and Catalans & Arcanes of PGP1 stood out. The Dark knights won the tournament after a nailbiting final against kaalais. The catalans (in their flamboyant, fluorescent jerseys !!!) ended in the third place.

The ladies had their share of fun too with the throwball tournament throwing up some fiercely competed matches and at the end the supernovas had the final say and ended up as winners.

The whole BIM crowd turned up to support their favorite teams and everyone had a gala time with continuous drum beats echoing the strong vocal support of the crowd.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Welfare com 26 (the student body entrusted with the welfare of students at BIM) officially took charge on August 15 by organising Independence Day celebrations. The event had the august presence of Mr. Uma Shankar, GM of Regent Industries, Trichy. The function started with tamilthai vazhthu at 8 AM and ended promptly within a span of 25 min. After the flag hoisting and recital of national anthem, Mr. Uma Shankar spoke a few words to the students about the importance of personal independence in life. He also wished all the students well in their career paths they are going to choose. As a token of appreciation, a memento was presented to the chief guest by Hostel Warden, Mr. Sakkaram.

A fun filled Friendship day was celebrated at BIM, bringing newly forged friendships between members of PGP1 and PGP2 to the limelight and celebrating friendship with heartfelt enthusiasm. The day was marked by the specia event organised by Zetetica- the HR club of BIM. Friendhip bands were distributed and everyone tied to their friends' hands to signify their freindship. Students even vented out their creativity in getiing teh friendhip bands tied in inoovative ways. A huge cake was ordered and cut by seniors of PGP2. As a part of the event titled MON AMI (which in french means "My Friend", Students were asked to pick names of thier friends from lots and asked to give tasks to their friends. Prizes were also given to the contestants who best performed their tasks. All in all a great day to celebrate ended with much fun and laughter.

MARWAR' 09

MARWAR 09, the flagship event of BISMARC, the marketing club of BIM, was inaugurated with great pomp and splendour on 14th of July 2009. The traditional inaugural event of the BIM culture gives to the new horde of fresh minds that come into BIM, an insight of the life here, by providing them hands on experience on team Work, passion & commitment.
It was inaugrated by one of the brightest minds and a fast growing entrepreneur of the country, Mr. Kiruba Shankar, CEO of Business Blogging. Mr. Kiruba Shankar is also the co-founder of 'F5ive Technologies' and the Board Member of Wikipedia India Chapter. He congratulated BIM on coming up with an extensively knowledgeable and highly interesting event such as MARWAR. The inauguration was presided by the Director of BIM Prof. M.Sankaran and the PGP Chairman S.Sundar.
The first phase started with splitting PGP I into teams of 6-7 students, with an equal mix of boys and girls in all teams. The seniors are not left alone; they being veterans at BIM are made guides and mentors, named as Patrons and Matrons. After basic activities were done with, the war began. Each team is asked to come up with any extremely creative product. It could be totally out of the moon or a very simple one with a very different use. The challenge was in promoting the product and building up a business model.
The teams came out with taglines, logos, posters, banners, a SWOT analysis of the product, Catalogue and Description, Market Survey to study the potential of their product in the market and finally a Business plan for the manufacture and sale of the product. After which approval was got from various committees like the Pollution Control Board, Municipality and Feasibility board (All formed by seniors).
Bidding was done for various advertisement points at BIM, after which teasers were put up before the on-stage product launch. Later promotional activities like Print Ads, Video Ads were displayed, stalls were put up and Personal selling was done. Each team was given some virtual money at the beginning of the event and effective utilization of funds in the various phases of the event would make them successful.
The marketing club of BIM, BISMARC the organizers of MARWAR09, said that the students were given a run for their money, as they were inculcated with the intricacies and delicacies of business in a streak which they can use it for the bigger oceans of life.
E-quills, the next generation pen was the winner whereas Lentes, a multi-functional eye wear and Slumber on, a mosquito repellent mattress were runners up. They were awarded on the Valedictory function during which Mr. Balaji Prakash, Deputy General Manager, Marketing of Kavin Care was the chief guest and gave a thought provoking speech to the students. Hence MARWAR was a grand success and ended in pageantry and grandeur.

BREAKING THE ICE

As they say all conversations begin with breaking the ice. Kalaikom 25, the cultural committee of BIM welcomed all freshers with an ice-breaker event. This event had a signature campaign and also a "know your seniors" campaign. We also had a evening introduction sessions where the freshers were asked to com to the event dressed in wackiest combination possible. Many freshers participated in it with high level of enthusiasm and kicked off their entry in a grand style. As a part of our Freshers party, Prarambh 2009 we had a treasure hunt. Witty, wacky and wow!! that was Prarambh 2009 for you.

This event also had Mr and Ms BIM contest with Mithun Sneh and Anchita Khaitan winning the title respectively.

A New Beginning...

Yes... the 26th batch of MBA students of BIM have arrived... Young minds full of dreams, ready to take on the challenges and the hectic life of B-school, yet ready not to miss the maximum fun in the next two years at BIM. Its been just over a month at BIM, and yet everyday has been eventful with some activity or the other and the newly arrived students have risen up to the challenge and have enthusiastically participated in every event conducted at the campus. They have come up with brilliant ideas and have given great performances. They have already shown that they are not just good at academics but also are a greatly talented bunch.

They have displayed spectacular range of talents from singing to mimicry, dancing to debating. This blog will cover all the events and celebrations at BIM. Here's to BIM and its enthusiastic students, another year of fun and learning are yet to be experienced...

FOXTROT 2009

FOXTROT is the dance event at BIM. It is one of the most much awaited events at BIM. This event provides a platform for all those who want to dance. FOXTROT 09 was a big hit among the students. We had solo dance, couple dance and group dance. One need not be adept in dancing to participate in this. Anyone who wants to dance can give it a shot.

The entire event was filled with fun. The dance shows proved to be absolutely entertaining. The audience was on their toes through out the program. No one could have witnessed a better sangamam of music and dance. We had very funny dances as well.

The audience were literally doubled up with laughter when they saw some performances. So on the whole the event was a grand success. Hands off to the KALAIKOM guys of of Bim, who pulled of the show very smoothly. As always, any event at BIM would be empty without a dance floor. We had an amazing dance floor with mind blowing numbers being played continuously.

RADIANCE- Blood Donation Camp

All work and no play makes Jack a Dull boy. On a similar note, managers without social consciousness are no leaders. Radiance, the dedicated, wholly student CSR club is dedicated to precisely this. The Social Consciousness Club of BIM, it provides a channel through which our students show their sense of responsibility towards the society. It organizes activities for the good of the underprivileged such as reading and activity sessions in orphanages. Tireless and always committed when it comes to a social clause, Radiance is involved in organizing blood donation camps and also collecting clothes, books and other materials for refugee camps in and around the city. At present, it is closely working with a Sri Lankan refugee camp which is taking in people from the strife-torn parts of that country. In order to stir up and sustain noesis towards social responsibility, Radiance does extensive work with NGO's in trying to chart out newer and better avenues of social service.

FINGUNS

It is a financial quiz event which covers both finance related gk as well as conceptual questions on corporate finance and financial accounting. The quiz was conducted online with the question set made on MS Excel and put on the KNET-The Knowledge Network of BIM from where participants downloaded it and sent the solutions by mail to FinClub. The event was for half an hour with each team consisting of 2 members each. The event received a phenomenal response with 35 teams taking part in the event.

The event was won by team DJ consisting of Dev and Jayakanth winning cash prize of Rs 2500. Team Dragons, consisting of Francis and Sivaram G, were runners up winning prize of Rs1500, followed by Team Investomaniacs , consisting of Pradeep and Sivaprakasam, who got Rs 1000 as prize money.

YUDH VIDHYA

Yudh Vidhya is a business simulation game. The first year students were divided into 20 teams comprising of 4 members each, with one donning the mantle of the chief executive officer and the rest taking up th roles of Directors representing Marketing, Finance and Information Management functions. Twenty teams competed in the first round and the top ten teams moved to the finals. This simulation game was a very good learning experience it gave the required impetus to learn to take operative and strategic decisions in the corporate world. Teams vied with one another with the gut instinct and visionary thinking and the decisions were captured and processed using software developed by our students and that churned out results in the form of business reports in real time. The final round consisted of two quarter, at the beginning of the each quarter the teams were given data about the market share and the new product launch. After each quarter the profit reflected the effectiveness of the decision. This simulation game is being organized by the Finclub since 2001, have proven to be an effective tool to familiarize students with peer group dynamics, a high level interactivity, competitive pressure, interpersonal communication and multidimensional participation.

The event was won by the team Scubes consisting of Sivakumar.N, Srijayaram.S, Saravanan.M and Deepak M Chordia winning cash prize 5000 and the first runners-up were Team The usual Suspects consisting of Palaniappan, Rajesh Soundar, Sivakumar and Surendran.E winning cash price of 3000 and the second runners were team Dragons consisting of Harendhira Prasad, Karthikeyan.S, Sivaram and Sharan Kumar R winning cash price of 2000.

BUFFET’S PICK

It is an equity research contest that tests ones skills at valuing stocks based on strong fundamental analysis and various valuation models. The event required each team to submit an equity research report giving recommendations on a stock of their choice with the long term perspective. Each team was to be constituted of 3 members with at least one member of PGPII so that PGPI students can leverage the knowledge of their senior colleague. The research reports have been sent to eminent investment advisor and visiting faculty to BIM Mr B. Venkatesh who will be evaluating the research reports. The event got a warm response from students with 25 quality research reports from BIM students.

BROWN BAG SESSION

Brown Bag Session is a lecture on equity research, was organized by FINCLUB for the students of PGP-I. The lecture was given by Mr. Venkatesh of Navera Consulting. The lecture was organized as a part of FINANZ UTSAV ’09. He enlightened the students with his ideas regarding how to make a basic equity research report. The lecture gave ideas regarding the various models available to make a equity research report. The ideas given were grasped by the students which was evident from their enthusiastic participation in BUFFET”S PICK-Equity research contest. There was an overwhelming response rom the student community. FINCLUB thanks sriraman sir for his involvement and guidance throughout the event.

SANGAM 2009

Sangam is an annual meet of the BIM alumni.Sangam 09 was a grand success. Alumni of the 23rd, 22nd and 21st batch had come. Since it was on a weekend, many of them were able to make it. The entire college was buzzing with enthusiasm.

There were around 80 of them who had come for Sangam. It was a moment of nostalgia for all of us. It was so good to meet all the seniors after a long time. The moment they entered the campus, they wanted to play cricket. All of them played endlessly. Everyone was whiling their time by chatting with all of us. That day evening there were lots of cultural programs for the alumni. We had everything, right from songs, music, dance, fashion show, mimicry show; drama .We had the privilege to view the performances of a few of our seniors. Special dinner was arranged for the alumni. The cultural activities ended with a dance floor.

The dance floor was simply rocking. This went on till 1 am. The event was filled with fun and frolic. It was basically a wonderful get together for all the alumni. They said that it was a good detour from their usual busy and monotonous schedule. Then the following day, which happened to be Sunday, they met few of the professors. The bim road was filled with the alumni standing in groups and sharing their experiences with their buddies. Then, that day afternoon they had special lunch at the mess. And ,slowly everyone started leaving. We really miss them a lot. It was a sweet home coming for them. Bim streets look empty without them. We await the next Sangam.

SUNDARA RAGHAVAN CRICKET TROPHY'09

Sundara Raghavan Cricket Trophy (SRCT), the flagship event of Sportscom is back with a bang. The SRCT’09 was inaugurated on the eve of 25th January.

This event happened in a grand manner with 24 floodlights decorating the Eden Gardens of BIM hostel. The tournament was spread around 6 nights with 8 teams participating in it totally, 4 teams from first and second year each. The teams are as follows,

BULLS N BEARS

‘BULLS N BEARS’ is an online stock trading event organized by FINCLUB for the students every year. The event was held from 27^th Jan to 2^nd Feb 2009. The aim of the event is to provide an on-hand experience in stock trading for the students of BIM through virtual online stock trading portals and is a team event with each team comprising of two members. This time the event was held in a big way with co-operation from the service provider “khelostocks.com” with separate web space for ‘BULLS N BEARS’. The space can be viewed at http://www.khelostocks.com/crescita.html . The participants witnessed daily ups and downs in the stock prices according to the real market scenario. Cash prizes and gifts will be given to over all winners and the trading day winners. The event was a great success with an overwhelming response of 81 registrations. MANAGEMENT GAME

Students of BIM, especially PGP I, had an opportunity to experience the real business environment inside the campus. It was the day when Prof. Vinoth Dumblekar was invited to the campus to conduct the business simulation game. This game lasted for the whole day. The students who were grouped into teams of 5 or 6 members were asked to strategise their business including price, advertisement expense, percentage credit sales, material purchase etc.. The whole day was divided into 2 financial quarters. The students were expected to put their knowledge that they had gained in the course and were asked to analyse the results of the decisions that they made. Of course these 5 or 6 people were assigned roles of chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief marketing Officer (CMO), Chief Operating Officer (COO) etc.. The students also gave feedback regarding the game, coming out with their views like, they had better understanding of the financials of the company and they could relate the numbers they find tin the reports. The best team was ranked as per the wealth the possessed at the end. The students also learnt about how difficult is it to convince other over once point of opinion over a decision.

Drama, action, romance, horror,.. various genres that one sees in many movies that roll out of filmdown. And, there’s a fan for each one of them here at BIM. Enthusiasts and others alike gather around when it’s Talkies time. Bim Talkies a regular feature of every trimester, organized by kalaicom satisfies these various tastes with two movies screened on an evening. A list of Hindi, English and Tamil movies is put up for the voting by kalaicom and the two movies that garner the most number of votes are played. And for this time trimester it was ‘SAROJA’ from the recent stables and DDLJ from the archives were the movies screened. A thoroughly enjoyable evening it was for BIMites and kalaicom signed off for the day, promising more such events this trimester.

PROMOTTO 2K8

Promotto is a promotional plan contest for both the PGP 1 and PGP 2, conducted by BISMARC the marketing club of BIM. As many as 36 teams registered for promotto with 3 members per team. And once the registration of the teams was done, each team were given a case-let. The case-let was about the Segway, the Human Transporters. The teams were asked to submit a report on promotional plan for Segway which also included the financials, print ads and video ads. The students were informed that the evaluation criteria will be based on the creativity, feasibility, comprehensiveness, print ads and video ads.

And from the promotional plan reports and ads submitted six teams was selected for the final presentation. For the final presentation Prof. Sundar and Prof. David Jawahar were invited as judges. All the teams made their presentation and results were announced on the same day and the price amount and certificates was distributed to the student by Prof. Sriraman. The winners were Highbrows- the team members were Aishwarya S, Ramya Balakrishnan and Sharan Kumar R, they were given Rs 2000.

The second price Rs 1500 was given to the team Plagarized, the team members were Prasana Murali, Alex and Arjun and the third price Rs 1000 was given to 3 Angry men, the team members are Harendra Prasad, Sivaram and Sivaprakasam. The event was a great success, and a post promotto video showing the event and the winners was released by the BISMARC.

KSHAN is the Impromptu Strategy formulation game organized by FINCLUB for the students every year. The event is about strategy formulation for the given situation. KSHAN’08 is a great success with an overwhelming response of more than 35 teams. The event witnessed most enthusiastic participants with amazing strategies solving the given problem. The winners were given on the spot cash prizes. KSHAN ’08 was organized and conducted by FINCLUB25 yesterday.

This year’s episode of CRESCITA was presided by the chief guests namely Andrew.T.Simkin, US Consul General; Babu Rao, Director (Personnel), Neyveli Lignite Corporation; Mr. Subramanian, CEO, Subiksha; M Sankaran, Director, BIM; Sundar, PGP Chairman, BIM. The honoraries inaugurated the conference by litting the kuthuvilakku. This was followed by the welcome address by the Director M.Sankaran.

Director in his welcome address touched points about the Institution and its growth and CRESCITA 2008. While talking about the institute he mentioned the success of institute entering into its 25^th year.

About the conference he made a point that it is an institution by itself and CRESCITA 2008 symbolises initiation, co-operation and management by doing. He mentioned that CRESCITA 2008 which is completely student driven conference has its theme which will reflect the environment with its changing realities. He also did mention that current environment which is highly volatile can give both positive and negative aspects about changes and it’s our responsibility to identify which can contribute and which gets affected. A thrilling Grand Finale was played between the teams "PREDATORS" and "DARK KNIGHTS" which went down to the wire. "PREDATORS" triumphed and walked away with the trophy and cash prize of Rs.6000.

The throwball event for girls FREETHROW '08 had two teams, one from 1st year and one from 2nd year. The fascinating game ended with the 2nd years emerging victorious and keeping the history unchanged and winning a prize amount of Rs.3000.

Independence Day Celebration

It was the dawn of the first day of 62nd year of Independent India. BIMites gathered at the East end Gardens to celebrate the Nation’s independence and pay homage to the warriors. WELFARECOM of BIM prepared the stage for the I-Day celebration. Mr.Gnanadurai Michael, the guest of honour for the occasion, hoisted the tricolour flag and gave an inspirational speech recollecting the sufferings and sacrifices of our forefathers. Midnight’s children are yet to experience the real freedom, freedom from communal riots, freedom from poverty and lot more. The speech ended with BIM students and the chief guest promising to make a difference.

Thanks giving..

It’s a tradition in BIM for the PGP I to thank PGP II for the way they have been greeted into BIM, a token of love and affection. So this was one more way to celebrate. It was THANKS GIVING DAY. This time KALAIKOM 25 took the opportunity to shower the show with much more fun and frolics. “Juke Box” was the warming up show wherein dedications was raining for both individuals and groups. Fun came through the way of a melodious song and couple of dance performances by PGP I,which actually set the party mood up. Some identified stars of PGP II was honoured with the awards like Miss Vamp, Miss/Mr. Blabbermouth, Hunk of BIM, Dennis the menace, Miss/Mr gossip, Night watchman. The party ended with the ‘dance floor’ which gave the BIMites an exuberant night.

FRESHER’S PARTY

The formal fresher’s party of silver jubilee batch was held in the east end gardens which glittered with colourful lights. The eve started with a duet song from a movie of eighties which infused energy into the audience for the rest of the night. A part of this event was the selection of Mr and Ms BIM. The first round was a talent search round, where the contestants showcased their talents which ranged from singing, dancing to writing a poem. At the start of the second round, the battle gained momentum. This time it was a ramp walk where all the contestants showed a good stage presence, of course a good walk. The final and the most decisive part of the event came, the ‘shipwreck’ where the contestants were paired to face the bombardment of the judges in form of the unpredictable questions. It gave the audiences many things to cheer about and finally the titles for the Mr and Ms BIM which read as PRITHVIRAJ and SANYOGITA was conferred to Rex and ShriJayanthi of PGP I. The night also saw some storming dance performanced by PGP II which actually smoothed the event.Then came the highlight of the night... the must waited “frenzied mad dancing” which made all BIMites ‘rock the stage till it break’.

HUNTING SEASON ! ! !

This is a hunting season! Of course not ducks.

It was 6 : 30 am on Saturday , August 3rd, 2008 when the hunters of BIM, with the name banners reading like RIDERS, TRAIL BLAZERS marched towards the hunting point. KALAIKOM, the committee that has always been the reason for the fun and frolics at BIM was waiting with the mystique maps to kick start the event. Yes! It was TREASURE HUNT for the day,” QUEST DE STORIA”.

The teams were given with a mystique map, a symbol of identity like (Φ,є,etc..) and a first clue which read like “wings are beautiful”, “up, up and away”. A signal of gunshot was fired by the organizers and time started ticking. Amidst their tough times of travelling through the clues, the hunters (PGP I) has to escape from the attacks by the policing authorities (PGP II) with the water filled balloon bombs.
All the teams made their ways successfully through all the clues and got their treasure with different timings. Hunt ended... But has the event ended? “NO” – was the word from KALAIKOM. Adding to that

“Time is over as a HUNTER, It’s time for u to put your shoes of HUMOUR” said the organisers.
All the teams pulled their sleeves up and started to crush their brains. Eve of the same day under the moon light, they show cased their talents of humour. With the hunts and humour ending the final Winners of the event were announced in the fresher’s party.
It was TRAIL BLAZERS with the blaze.

MARWAR'08– Resounding Success

Marwar’08 – the flagship event of BISMARC the marketing club @BIM is a stupendous success, thanks to the creative content which enthralled the participants. What was just started as a small contest has got metamorphosed over years into a mega event. Marwar’08 was kicked off by V.R.Padmanaban, Chief Client Officer, Media Edge, a perfect guest for the event, who has donned a number of roles in his career from paper boy to cricket umpire. His gripping speech on his past experiences was interesting and informative.

What’s fascinating about Marwar is its format which broke the myth that Marwar is all about marketing. It encompassed everything from finance to resource management. The Marwar journey started with the selection of product name, logo and tagline. The students did market surveys and were even put through hardships of the public clearance boards. The students did SWOT analysis, came out with Print and teaser Ads for branding and performed a formal product launch. Some teams even went a step ahead and conducted Ad campaigns by sending Ads through newspapers and coffee cups. The guides from PGP-II gave their very best and were behind the teams.

As the last part of the War the teams presented their works to the faculties of BIM. They were rated as per their performance and innovation. The War came to an end with the mystery in the minds of the warriors about who will win the War.Team-f5 with their product face freshener came out victorious, followed by H2Puro & Reflections. The teams had an experience which they’ll cherish for their lifetime.

FINANZ UTSAV'08:

FINCLUB of BIM conducted FINANZ UTSAV ,a series of finance events and games which was spread over a week.Buffett's Pick- an Equity Research Contest was conducted as part of Finance Utsav.This contest aims at testing the participants skills at valuing stocks based on strong fundamental analysis and valuation methodologies.The participants have to identify the unexplored or undervalued stock scrip that have the potential to outperform the markets in the long run.This proved as a useful exercise for stuents who were looking for a career in finance. Professor. B. Venkatesh evaluated the reports and the winners were Arul Jothi,Alex Chandra of
PGP-I and Govindarajan from PGP-II.For all the others who didnt want the heavy financial work but wanted to see some money, Finance Utsav had something for them too.EUREKA, an online Data Base Quiz based on questions from four databases – Crisinfac, IAS, Prowess & BB was conducted over 3 days.The Quiz consisted of 40 Questions from one database per day which had to be answered in 90 minutes. The objective of this Quiz was to make the participants toaccess the database in depth, search and locate information,but the final aim was to make the participants more familiar with the databases.Prizes were awarded to the winning teams on a
daily basis and to the first 3 overall winners. The overall prize winners of the event were Team Dexter & Dee Dee comprising of Bhuvaneshwari and Devasena K of PGPI.

Holi Celebration @ BIM:

Holi, the festival of colours, brings with it promises of newer colours in life each year and this year it was no different at Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy. Like last year, Holi celebrations took place in the night. Students of the 23nd and 24rd batch let down their hair and doused each other in rich colours in the spirit of Holi. The celebrations started at around eight pm. Colours were thrown everywhere and within an hour, the field was awash with many colours and the students were covered in various colours too. As usual the students took many snaps to cherish the memorable celebration . The celebrations ended at around eleven pm that night.

YUDH VIDYA'08:

How often have you felt that you are a cog in an organizational wheel? How often have you found your decisions being overridden by your superiors?
How often have you felt the “need to know” what's happening elsewhere, so as to take better decisions and to develop a wider perspective of your organization?
To answer all these questions finance club of Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy conducted “YUDHVIDYA-08”, a management simulation game. The main objective of the game is to formulate a strategy in a competitive environment and to make critical decisions across functional departments as a team.
The Game involves decision making for a company with focus on a particular performance measure. It is played for four quarters, where each quarter is defined as a three month period. At the beginning of every quarter, a new business opportunity will dawn. The teams will take decisions, whose combined impact will be communicated through reports at the end of each quarter. After receiving the reports of the quarter another round of decisions have to be taken keeping in mind the past performance as well as the new scenario which has emerged. Although all teams will start the Game with the same assets, financial structure, production capacity, product mix and potential for success, the wealth created or lost will depend on the path charted by the team as well as by the competition in every quarter.

The decision making time, Standard and Additional Decision Forms, business situation, constraints and context is described before the starting of each quarter. Every team is required to read and understand the information before initiating “play of the Game”. Sample Decisions Forms and other relevant material are given in the Sample Section. Although it may appear that there are too many decisions to take, the team will gradually see which decisions need to be taken more frequently than the others. The set of documents along with other papers are given during the play are to be read in conjunction with the manual. The information contained therein will override any information contained in the manual. Late submission of the decision forms may attract penalty of a specified amount, which shall be deducted from the profits of the defaulting team. The team’s performance is gauged using Cumulative Profit after Tax (PAT) of all the four quarters, for deciding the winning team.This game served as a learning process and as an arena for testing of acquired experience and knowledge with a little fun. It is the best opportunity that one can get to the real situation without taking financial and career risks.

Mr.Raja Sukumar, Director of Sumathi Finance Limited gave a lecture on “Clean Development Mechanism”. He is also the director of BIM’s Alumni Association. He explained about the principles used to design and screen CDM projects. He made us understand the impact of CDM projects. T he main high light of the session was the interaction that the students had when he discussed about the corporate behaviour of CDM investors. On the whole, the session was very much informative.

ATHENAEUM 08

The Centre for Contemporary Management Research (CECMAR), the research wing of Bharathidasan Institute of Management conducted "Athenaeum 08" – the Second International Conference on Management Research. The conference was held on 15th and 16th of February 2008 at Trichy in M.D. Hall located in the BHEL premises. The welcome address was given by Prof. M.Sankaran, the director of BIM. He stressed on the academic excellence of BIM and its achievements in the last 24 yrs. The conference was inaugurated on 15th at 09.15 am by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor of the Bharathidasan University, Dr. M. Ponnavaikko. The Honourable Vice Chancellor delivered the inaugural address and released the proceedings of the conference. . He spoke with pride about the value based education provided at BIM. He also stressed on the importance of continuous learning, decision-making and management research. The inaugural function was also presided over by another distinguished guest – Mr. G.K.Agarwal, Executive Director (HR& PMI) of the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited. Mr. G.K.Agarwal delivered a special address at the conference. Mr. G.K.Agarwal also received the first copy of the conference proceedings. He spoke about the rising intellectual capital in India accompanied by vast practical knowledge. He said that 3 key factors for any ambitious individual are aspiration, inspiration and perspiration. He also said more emphasis must be given to R&D in India. Finally, he congratulated BIM for its research facility. With the vote of thanks the inaugural programme was concluded by 11.15 am.

The paper presentations sessions started immediately after the inaugural function. Athenaeum 08 has attracted participation from throughout India and across the globe. The conference has accepted research papers on all functional streams of management. In addition to the conventional functions, a few papers on entrepreneurship have also been received. In all, more than 120 papers were received from India and 10 from other countries. Of these, 57 papers have been selected after careful scrutiny by a peer committee. The paper presentation sessions were chaired by 4 eminent researchers drawn from different universities.
The first plenary session for the conference was held to discuss the topic “Women in Management”. The participants were Mrs. Pamela Ramalingam, Director, iSoft Technologies; Mrs.Uma Baskaran, AVP, AXIS Bank; Dr. N. Manimekalai, Director, Centre for Women Studies, Bharathidasan University and Mrs. Lalitha Natraj Head, BIU, ICICI Bank. They spoke about large participation of women in various fields but not in higher positions. Only 2% of women occupy management positions because of their low awareness of challenges and opportunities in the corporate world. Women should realize their potential, shed their inhibitions and become emotionally strong. Some sacrifices must be made for progress in careers. Following this, some questions were put forward to highlight gender differences in the corporate world, how to achieve work-life balance, etc. The panelists were very participative and answered all the questions in very practical manner. They concluded by stressing on the importance of double income families with more trust and adjustments for the women to excel in their careers. The first day of Athenaeum’08 was concluded with cultural programme performed by BIM students which reflected the Indian culture.

The second day of the conference started with the paper presentation session. The paper presentation sessions were chaired by 4 eminent researchers drawn from different universities. After the paper presentation sessions the second plenary session for the conference was held to discuss the topic “Creating an Entrepreneurial spirit-Opportunities and Challenges”. The participants for the session were Mr.Muralidharan.K.G, MD, G.K & SONS, Mr. T. K. Sreedhar, CMD, Novellsys Technologies, Mr.AshokKumar, AshokFarms/MAA Integrators and Mr. P.M.Austin, CEO, Max Value Learning Technologies and Consulting. This session was very interesting and informative. This was immediately followed by a special workshop on ”Leadership” conducted by Mr. C.Mahalingam ,Exec VP (HR) & Chief People Officer,Symphony Services Corporation.
The workshop was followed by the valedictory function which was presided over by the two eminent personalities Dr. M. Anandakrishnan, Chairperson, Madras Institute of Development Studies and Mr. T. Anandan, General Manager, HR, BHEL. Valedictory function began with Mr. Anandakrishanan presenting the first edited copy of the Book entitled “Emerging Issues in Management” based on the papers presented at ATHENAEUM’08. The welcome note was given by the conference chairman, Dr. P. David Jawahar who used the opportunity to thank the international and national participants who presented their papers at ATHENAEUM’08 .He also thanked all the moderators under whom the papers were presented. He thanked all those who directly or indirectly helped to make the conference colorful, enjoyable and enlightening. Mr.Anandan gave the special address and congratulated the participants for their valuable presentations. He didn’t wanted to give any mundane talks instead he spoke about 10 steps to becoming a really great manager which was apt as the audience present were budding managers. He also enlighten students about the important roles a manager has to play is that of a planner, provider and protector. He concluded by sharing 10 guiding principles of staying afloat in the changing world. Then the chief guest for the evening Mr. Anandakrishanan, spoke about his strong association with BIM and also told that BIM was unique because of its totally autonomous status and its ties with BHEL. He also spoke about one important emerging issue “managing R&D and managing Innovation”. Lastly he concluded by saying three important things that is needed for managing R&D and managing Innovation is sovereignty of decision making, avoiding sectorial distortion and lastly protecting public interest. This followed the presentation ceremony were in the best papers in each functional areas were awarded. Finally vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Nigama, faculty of BIM.

Finclub of BIM conducted a forum on career management .The objective of the forum was to guide first year students in planning their career in Finance. The topic of discussion was Equity Research, a fast growing emerging field in finance. Second year students Saravanan, Ganesh, Kalai and Krishna shared their views and experiences with first year students.This was a very interactive and an informative session.

Sundararaghavan Cricket Trophy -08:

In a land of cultural and social diversity, cricket is one of the important reasons that unify the diverse yet so passionate people of this country. Cricket not only unifies the people but also conceals the man made differences that are present in this country. Cricket’s influence on the students of BIM is no different.

The Sundaragavan Cricket Trophy was held between 21st January and 29th January 2008. This 9 day cricketing extravaganza not only unleashed the cricketing skills of the players but also helped the neo –managers to relax from their tight academic schedule. The event was conducted by SPORTSCOM (the student committee responsible for organizing sports events in the institution) with good support from the management and BHEL staff who helped in organizing the tournament.

The tournament involved 9 teams in the Men’s category and 2 teams in the Women’s category. The scores were electronically recorded and were provided to the participating captains. After intense rivalries, close calls and last over sixes, the final (Men) was played on 29th January between two of the most gifted and passionate teams, the RDX and the Pokkiris. It was a match that defined the general theme of the tournament and was worthy of a final. The Pokkiris emerged winners in a closely fought match with just 2 balls to spare.

The ladies final was played on the same day between Halla-bol and Chak de bim. This match again was a close encounter where Halla-bol won the match with one ball to spare.

The tournament finally ended with the presentation ceremony where awards were given to manager-players who reveled in the tournament with excellent performances. Sporting tournaments like the Sundaragavan Cricket Trophy not only increase the competitive nature of the players but also indicate the true value of teamwork and sportsmanship which are indeed a very important asset for any individual especially managers. The Sundaragavan Cricket Trophy was played with good sportsmanship and upheld the true spirit of the game and is well and truly the crown jewel of the intra-collegiate events conducted in BIM.

‘SANGAM 07- The Reminiscence’

It was that time of the year when the alumni take a walk down memory lane and revisit the fun b-school life they left behind to pursue their careers. Yes, we’re talking about Sangam- a reunion event hosted by Kalaikom (the cultural society at BIM) where the alumni came to BIM for a night full of music, dance, camaraderie and fun. Aptly termed as ‘SANGAM 07- The Reminiscence’, it was a night where, even as current students acted, danced and sang, it brought back all the memories of the good times shared with friends.

Sangam saw a fiery and sparkling start with the fireworks show. The event saw a number of dance performances both from BIM 23 and BIM 24. The event was kickstarted with Vishwanath and Venupradeep singing a popular song. Following that was a game where couples were invited from the alumni. The girls had to stick bindis on their partners’ faces within a minute. Amidst loads of cheering, Pavithra and Choka emerged as winners! Following this game were a number of dances performed. Rakshita and her group perfomed to a medley of songs and ended their performance with a dance to celtic tunes. Shilpi and Avirupa danced to Madhuri’s tunes with the title track from the movie ‘Aaja Nachle’. Bonny gave a stellar solo dance performance to bhangra and indipop beats whereas Sowmya and Dhananjay sang and strummed on the guitar.This was followed by spectacular dance by ‘Rolling Rockers’ of PGP-1. A short play was performed by PGP I students which talked of love strategies to win over the lady. The event ended with another fireworks show and then the dance floor was opening up to students. Students and Alumni danced the night away and in the end, each one retired to their rooms after having loads of fun and thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Hopefully, this SANGAM helped forged new bonds between students and strengthening the old ones.The entire event was hosted by PGP I students and Kalaikom to make it as enjoyable to the alumni as they enjoyed staging the show.

Spl Lecture on "Management Consulting"

BIM students had a privilege of interacting with Mr. Jayaraman, a B. Tech from IIT Madras and MBA from Wharton, working with the Boston Consulting Group, Boston for the past five years.

Mr. Jayaraman spoke to the students on “Introduction to Management Consulting”. He started off with the history of consulting explaining how initially Banks were providing Consulting services but this practice of combining Financing & Consulting functions under the same roof was soon called into question. Though Frederick Taylor is supposed to have pioneered consulting it was Arthur D. Little the world's first management consulting firm and today is one of the world's leading management consulting firms, working closely with Fortune 500 firms across the globe. McKinsey started its operation in 1920’s as a strategy consulting firm, BCG, known for having a more analytic approach to strategy formulation, was started in the 60’s. Many consulting firms were later formed by the former employees of leading consultancy firms.

The Big Four is a term used to indicate the main powerhouses of consulting, PWC, Deloitte, KPMG and Ernst & Young. They all began as auditing firms before leveraging their expertise and knowledge to succeed in the field of Management consulting.

The functions of Consultancy firms can be broadly divided into Strategy, Process & Implementation. Any project is carried out through these phases. Mr. Jayaraman gave an overview of the functions involved in these phases. He also spoke about the career prospects in Consulting.

In India, McKinsey started its operation in 1970’s to become the first firm into Management Consulting, Boston Consulting Group is present in the country from 1985. Recently various Indian software firms like Infosys, Wipro, TCS, etc have forayed into the implementation phase; they are seen as potential competitors to global majors like Accenture and IBM in the near future.

During the second session, the students were given a real life consulting case & Mr. Jayaraman explained how to approach the problem in a systematic manner. The case was handled in an interestingly and innovative method employing the various management concepts and bringing out the solution from the students in a phased manner.

BIM successfully conducts Crescita 2007.

While students have abundant information on the great Indian growth story, questions about its sustainability and challenges constantly haunt them. In an effort to unravel some of these questions BIM Trichy had organized a two day seminar in association with ET Empower on ‘Emerging Issues in India Inc’ in Chennai on 3rd and 4th November.

‘Crescita’, the annual conference of the BIM Trichy saw speakers from various sectors share perspectives on issues such as currency appreciation, inclusive growth, energy requirements, supply chain establishment, financial inclusion, effective communication with target audience and talent retention.

“The theme is important for youngsters who will be part of powerful sectors and companies tomorrow. They need to be aware of bottlenecks such as inadequate infrastructure and social exclusion that might affect growth”, said Prof M Sankaran, director-BIM.
Mr. BL Ghasolia, executive director-chief corporate finance, ONGC, who inaugurated the two-day seminar, outlined the energy requirements to fuel India’s burgeoning growth. He also advocated the need to tap alternative sources of energy.

The 200+ management students who attended the seminar also tuned in to issues pertaining to specific sectors such as the retail and communication.

B Venkataramana, VP-human resources, Reliance Retail spoke about HR had moved beyond payroll management and data entry to drawing the image and culture of an organization. “Since the traditional HR can be automated or outsourced, the focus is increasingly moving to designing retention strategies”, said Mr. Venkataramana. This was especially important in the retail sector where there are too many jobs chasing few people, he said.

Mr. Alvin Saldanha, national creative director, Shobiz Integrated Marketing Communications acquainted the aspiring media planners in the audience with innovative means to capture consumer mind-share. “Increasingly, press and TV advertising are playing a support function in driving consumer traffic to the net. Consumers today are not available in the same media and spot as before”, said Mr. Saldanha. Companies were leveraging blogs, social networking sites and pod casts to attract consumers.

The diverse perspectives and chunks of advice from the speakers went down well with the students who kept the speakers on their toes by shooting them with a flurry of questions after each session.

During the day, the quizzing club of BIM organized BIM Quest, a corporate quiz event. The event was sponsored by Club Mahindra. The Event was orchestrated by Mr. Lloyd Saldanha of Grey Caps. The event had 2 stages, first one was a preliminary stage, open to all teams and the top 6 teams went on to play the finals. More than 100 teams from various corporate entities around the country participated in the opening round of BIMQuest. Top six teams comprising of Bhilai Steel, TCS, GE Money, Irevna, Cambridge Solutions and Sun Microsystems made it to the finals of BIMQuest. The finals had four rounds where the business acumen of the participants was judged to the core by the quiz master. The audience was kept wired to the quiz throughout by Mr. Saldanha with loads of audience questions and witty comments. The team from Sun Microsystems emerged as the winners and won a cash prize of Rs 25000. The team from Cambridge Solutions came second and got a cash prize of Rs 15000. TCS team came third and got a cash prize of Rs 10000. All the winning teams got holiday packages from Club Mahindra worth Rs 15000.

Day 2 of Crescita 2007 had started with Mr T. R Ramachandran, Country Head, Cards Division of Citibank Group, an alumnus of BIM, talking about various economic and financial trends related to the banking industry and its impact on India Rising.

Mr. Moorthi Chockkanathan, Senior VP, Head Delivery, Hexaware Technologies sharing his views about the role of the IT industry in India Rising and what more needs to be done in that direction to sustain the growth rate.

Ms Punitha Arumugam, Head of Madison Communications, took over the stage next and shared her views on how the Media industry, in particular the impact of media agencies in India Rising. She also spoke about the dearth of talent in this sector due to pay scale being incomparable with the BPO industry.

The afternoon session saw Mr Hariharan, Associate Director P & G India, share his views about the economic growth in general and how to sustain it but the emphasis was on the FMCG industry. He spoke about the growth of FMCG industry in India and how the changing demographics are affecting it now and how they will affect the growth rate of the industry in the future. He also shared few points on CSR initiatives of various companies that have a huge role to play in India Rising.

During both days of Crescita 2007, Government representatives in the form of Mr. R. Christodas Gandhi I.A.S (Secretary to the Govt of Tamil Nadu, Social Reforms) and Mr. Ashok Vardhan Shetty I.A.S (Secretary to the Govt of Tamil Nadu, Rural development and Panchayati Raj) applauded the efforts of India Inc for the rising growth rate but spoke about the huge gap in the increasing divide between the rich and poor. They had a common view on the industry going in for inclusive growth that benefits all sections of the society and also would help in sustaining the economic growth over a longer period of time.

All the sessions were highly interactive as the students kept shooting questions at the speakers regarding their queries.

The event came an end with the valedictory function being presided over by Mrs. Pamela Ramalingam, Director, ISoft Technologies. Mrs. Ramalingam, an alumna of the 1st batch on BIM, shared her view on the theme of the event and highlighted a few points that as budding managers and futures we need to keep in mind to ensure India keeps rising.

Crescita, that began its journey in 2005, is the annual conference of Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), Tiruchirappalli. BIMQuest the quizzing club of BIM, conducted a corporate quiz during Crescita 2006. The quiz was hosted by ‘Pick Brain’ Giri Balasubramaniam of Greycaps – one of India’s leading knowledge Services Company. More than 80 corporate teams participated in the quiz competition and it was a runaway success among the quizzing community. Team from Sanmar Group won the first prize and Infosys the second, prizes worth Rs 60000 were distributed to the winning teams. BIMQuest, teamed up with Greycaps, is coming bigger and better for the corporate quiz to be conducted during Crescita 2007 on 3rd November 2007.

BIM Students bag top 3 places at Southern Zone Regional Finals of Chanakya

AIMA's "Chanakya" was conducted during the Second week of October'07 in Coimbatore.

BIM Students won the Regional Finals of Southern Zone of India consisting of over 150 teams.

AIMA's "Chanakya" is a computer simulated business management game based on specifically created scenarios that focus on developing business acumen and to hone up decision making skills of participants. Conflicting situations induce the participants to take decisions under extreme pressure, as in real life situations. These situations/scenarios closely resemble business events and are similar to what one encounter in life span of an organization.

The top 3 positions were bagged by teams from BIM. 2 teams of 2nd year students shared the first prize at the regional finals and a team of 1st students took the runners up position.

TCS on various profiles at its end

An HR Team from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) visited BIM Trichy on October 20th October 2007 to give insights on career options MBA students have with an IT major like TCS. With an employee base of over 1 lac including its subsidiaries, the Q2 profit being up at Rs 1250Crore, the IT sector booming, winner of the best employer award for 3 years in a row, TCS is again on a hiring spree of under graduates and post graduates.

Mr. Samraj, HR Manager with TCS at Chennai, spoke about the various avenues TCS offers in the field of Systems, HR, Marketing and Operations to the MBA recruits. He told that as a system’s MBA one could get into the role of a Business Analyst where the job description focused on client interactions, requirements gathering, analysis and estimation models etc.

For someone who is an MBA with a specialization in marketing, he said TCS had job opportunities for them in the marketing divisions of its various verticals. The job description here was related to discussions with potential clients across the globe to pitch for projects, finding out new markets for TCS etc with the designation most probably as that of a Business Analyst.

TCS now has operations across 75+ countries all over the world. Some of these are onsite development centers, delivery centers, technical support offices etc. With such a huge employee base spread all across the globe, managing human resources is one of the most important tasks for TCS. As a result, today TCS is recruiting HR students from various premier MBA institutes to manage its human resources. According to Mr. Samraj, TCS now has HR people at all its onsite offices, so HR people also get a chance to go onsite like techies. He said every new MBA–HR was made to go under special training programs on a periodic basis to keep them up to date with the current HR trends in the IT industry and that the career growth in a company like TCS was phenomenal.

The session was highly interactive and Mr. Samraj gave insights on various queries raised by the students regarding recruitment procedure, career growth, package structuring for MBA's, life at TCS, and what TCS means to its employees.

Overall it was a very informative session for all the students at BIM Trichy as they got to have a first hand view of what a career would look at TCS after placements, 5 years down the line and probably also 10 years down the line.

ENIGMA – Quest for Excellence

BIM Trichy organized its first ever online quiz for graduate and post graduate students. The event was named ENIGMA – The Quest for Excellence. The quiz was organized over a period of 3 days with 2 stages. The first stage was the prelims and the 2nd stage was the finals. The event was a joint effort between PRCOM (PR Committee of BIM) and BIMQuest (Quizzing club of BIM).

The first stage of the event received 500+ registrations from B Schools, Engineering Colleges and other graduate/post graduate institutes. The question paper was mailed to the participating teams and they had to mail back the answers in a excel sheet with a specified format within an hour.

The 2nd stage of the event was the finals. Top 30 teams from the first round competed in this round. Teams from institutes such as FMS, IMT Ghaziabad, IFMR, IIM A, IIM L, SIBM, XLRI and BIM formed a major chunk of the 30 teams. The same format for quizzing was followed except that the numbers of questions were reduced to 30 this time but the level of difficulty was increased.

Finally the results were out and the top 10 teams were declared. Top 3 teams got cash prizes of Rs 5000, Rs 3000, Rs 2000 for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd position respectively and certificates of merit. The remaining 7 teams that formed the top 10 were issued certificates of participation. The list of the top 10 teams is given below.

Holi@2200 Hrs at BIM

The motto of BIM is value based education. That includes appreciating and celebrating our rich culture. India is known for its numerous festivals across its length and breadth, ranging widely in practices and traditions. And each is built strongly upon a lush historical legend.

The legend goes that when all of Hiranyakashipu's attempts to kill his son, Prahlad, failed. finally, he ordered young Prahlad to sit on a pyre on the lap of his sister, Holika, who could not die by fire by virtue of a shawl which would prevent fire affecting the person wearing it. Prahlad readily accepted his father's orders, and prayed to Vishnu to keep him safe. When the fire started, everyone watched in amazement as the shawl flew from Holika, who then was burnt to death, while Prahlad survived unharmed, after the shawl moved to cover him. The burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi.

The Holi, the festival of colours, brings with it promises of newer colours in life every year and sees the States in the north and west make merry and let loose to celebrate with the vibrant colours.

Holi, is celebrated with aplomb every year at Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy. Students bring out the traditional colors and play with great enthusiasm and vigour. This year was no different. Students of the 22nd and 23rd batch let down their hair and doused each other in rich colours as they luxuriated in the spirit of Holi. As a change this year, Holi celebrations took place in the night this year.

The evening arrived and as it struck seven, the air was filled with an unmistakable spirit of excitement and sounds of joy and greetings. The play began slowly with the fewer plucky ones venturing out to slap shades and dyes on each other and exchange hugs of greetings. Soon, the field was awash with mini rivers of colours flowing zigzag and students covered from head to toe in variant colours, exchanging greetings.

‘Rang barse…bheege chunar wali..’ came the line from the evergreen song, echoing the spirit of Holi. The pulsating and energetic music, that started up only added to the air of festivity. And was soon followed by animated dancing and shouts of laughter. Soon more voices joined in with the music. Interspersed was the repeating clicks of many a camera, as some students took on the role of photographers, capturing the many moments filled with colour and smiles.

After a bout of playing and running around, all gathered around to end the celebration filled night with traditional snacks of kalakand, jalebi, kachodi and kesar mithai. As the tired students trooped back, one voice was heard singing, “Rang barse…bheege chunar wali..”..the spirit..of colours..of Holi.

Female 'Schumachers' at BIM

“A man’s worst nightmare...a woman driver !” goes that saying. Well..here they were proved wrong ..in the annual All Women’s Car Rally 2007, called Fastrak’ 07. Held in Trichy on February 18, 2007, it was organised by The Aura, Trichy in association with Madras Motor Sports Club. “A rally, not a race,” was emphasized repeatedly, as the contest involved a drive over a 54 km stretch, within a specified time. The difference being, the earlier one arrived, the more penal points one was awarded, thus nullifying the incidence and risks of speeding.

The contest this year saw over 70 teams from Trichy, with each team consisting of three ladies, each taking on the role of driver, navigator and the person who calculates TSD ( time, speed, distance ) respectively. Among the huge turnout was two teams representing BIM, with Nishevitha, Aparna and Deepa in one team and Kohinoor, Yamini and Sowmya in the other.

The rally involved meticulous calculations of TSD over the stretch as one had to cross various strategically placed check posts over the rally, at the precisely marked times. As mentioned, arriving late would command a penalty, but arriving earlier would fetch a higher one. A drawn map of the route and a sheet with TSD instructions was handed over at the beginning of the race. To make it more challenging, there was also a quiz which consisted of questions regarding landmarks along the ride.

The rally began from St John’s Vestry Higher Secondary School and involved participants returning to the same spot over a period of two and a half hours, after the rally, along with the filled in answer sheet. It also covered areas of Thillai Nagar, BHEL and the main market. Trichy, on that Sunday, saw cars of various makes, models and colours zoom past each other, driven by ladies, trying to test their wits and driving abilities to make the best of their given resources.

“Entrepreneurship is not about starting a business, it is about new ideas,” began Shri H K Mittal, on a talk on entrepreneurship. And it is being practiced in organizations as intrapreneurship, which involves being innovative within the framework of organizations.

India is a country of great potential, but the factor that holds individuals back is the risk factor, which discourages them from following up on their ideas. Successful entrepreneurs possess certain qualities that enable them to handle all that comes their way. Entrepreneurs manage risk, Shri Mittal said, taking risks that they can afford, and can handle. This is known as taking calculated risks.

They also have a positive self concept and a need to achieve that spurs them to greater and newer heights. But the question raised was, can this need to achieve be built in individuals ? And the answer given was, that yes, it can, through correct training and counseling. Entrepreneurs, more importantly, are open to and learn from feedback, which enables them to initiate corrective action, in time, if needed. Persons possess three characteristics when related to problems. They are problem identification, problem solving and avoiding. The first two should be built upon.

He concluded by stating that the encouraging fact is that the scenario in India is now changing, with people taking up entrepreneurship rather than jobs. An address that led many people to recognize the traits that they need to develop to fulfill their dream of becoming entrepreneurs in the future.

Seminar on Business Incubators held at BIM

“Business incubators are the greatest innovators of the 21st century,” has been said by Jhiang Zameen, Chinese Premier. To illustrate the point, was an address by Shri R.M.P. Jawahar.

Business incubators are organizations that support the entrepreneurial process, helping to increase survival rates for innovative startup companies. Only entrepreneurs with feasible projects are admitted into the incubators, where they are offered a specialized menu of support resources and services. The resources and services open to an entrepreneur include: provision of physical space, management coaching, help in making an effective business plan, administrative services, technical support, business networking, advice on intellectual property and sources of financing. The incubation process is intended to last around 2-5 years.

Most of the business incubators in India have been set up by educational institutions, the first being set up National Institute of Technology, (NIT) Trichy. The objectives of a business incubator include supporting new ventures, technological development involved in these ventures, thus leading to contributions to the tech world as such, and industrial development, as many of these projects are in varied areas across industries. The also impart technical and management skills to entrepreneurs and assist in the dissemination and replication of discoveries to other new businesses, to help enhance productivity and growth. “A business incubator,” remarked Shri Jawahar aimed at, in essence, “promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and technology”.

The support extended by a business incubator lends credibility to any project and provides a resource network for development. Its interventions come in the form of providing physical location, knowledge inputs and counseling to an entrepreneur who has ideas but no access to resources. A business incubator, thus, brings together technicians and experts under one roof.

STEP-TREP has sponsored over 161 ventures in 12 years, of which the ten most successful ones are worth over Rs 300 crores and have created over 140000 jobs.

A business incubator contributes in more than obvious ways. “Each rupee invested in a business incubator, pays back four times to the government in 5-7 years and is expected to grow manifold.” cited Shri Jawahar as an illustration. Business incubators create jobs through new endeavors and encourage all social classes, thus leading to regional development. They also create investment in infrastructure, essential for any development. New products and projects are discovered, through these enterprises, thus crossing the innovation barriers.

In spirit, an entrepreneur gains invaluable exposure, experience and insights through a business incubator. But practically, records show that the mortality rate of new ventures inside is a business incubator is 20%, whereas outside its as high at 70%.

isolated hostels...further, quarantined college amidst a woodland.....a secluded computer centre that u might find near a detached mess.....though dissociated, the placidity of a B-School is very much present with a good gang of amigos who stay connected for life......

u'll have ur dashboard of life filled in totally with errands n chores that keeps u occupied all the while....an example(specimen-me):ive my book of "The Lexus and the Olive Tree" to be completed as the due date is gonna end by day after tmrw.....got the Mid-Term Exam tmrw-Corporate Finance II......got CFassignent to be completed....Have to prepare for my the "International Business Environment" presentations.....Economics Presentation's Deadline is nearin....Tmrw is "FoxTrot"-an intra collegiate Dance Event for which i have to Video Shoot.....also thr is a Line-Up of Xaminations in 2 days for 3 days thereafter.....also i have to start thinkin about EM(mech engg don't mistake it for Engg Mechanics....its Environmental Mgmt) project.....RM Case Studies along with few exercises he gave have to be completed.....ooops... almost forgot the worldcup that comin up which i have to catch up in the TV hall....with a coffee cup(bought from the dusk cafe) at 12 in the night..... i'm sittin in here ponderin over the this thread thinkin wat to write as the "Life at BIM"....???...........

Bismarc Treats

22 people, nine bikes, one car, one beautiful hotel, four waiters, a wad of 1000 rupee notes, one very happy hotel manager and a faint drizzle of rain was all it took and the evening was BISMARCED!!!!!

Sunday, the 3rd of September was when Bismarc 22 was taken for a treat to “The Thaai” (meaning mother, not a Thai restaurant) restaurant in Trichy by Bismarc 23. Prior to being flagged off at 7:45 pm for the outing by members of the Anti Bismarc Committee*(PGP2), the Bismarcians redefined Corporate Social Responsibility by informing the mess employees not to prepare food for the 22 Bismarcians as they would be dining out that evening.

45 minutes later they were outside “The Thaai” restaurant, the tables were ready for them and once in, the Bismarcians sat in groups of vegetarians and non-vegetarians for dining convenience. The evening’s course of dinner began with a variety of soups ranging from tomato soup, hot & sour soup to chicken soups. The soups were followed by the crackling Sizzlers ordered by the author and Suprabhat (read as Suprabhaath) which had the whole hotel covered in smoke for quite some time and then followed the main course comprising masala kulcha, paneer kadai, nethalli fry, plain dosa (ordered by Prabhakar), naan,vegetable jalfreiz, prawn fry, dragon chicken (did drive the fire in our stomachs), chicken makkanwa, fish fry, garlic naan, dhal makhani , channa masala, aloo mutter, mutton biriyani, dhal thadka, chicken 65, ginger fish, vegetable steak, gobi Manchurian, lemon soda, Coke, cassata ice creams, strawberry shakes, scoops of vanilla and butterscotch, all in multiple orders (that’s all my RAM permits he he). During the entire course of the dinner , the digicams clicked incessantly and even the food wasn’t spared!!!

22 burps later the Bismarcians (comprising Shailendra, Vinod, Chockalingam, Pravin, Mohan Raja, Mohan, Pawan, Sunil, Prabhakar, Suprabhat, Yazhini, Nandinee, Elancheran, Pragadeesh, Jagadish, Shiju, Madhan, Venu, Saravanan, Amit, Sowmya, Madhu) were done with the dinner and off they went on the return trip after a few hip hip hoorays at the hotel. The return trip through the Mathur-OFT road was lovely with everyone being kissed by the faint drizzle of rain which was accommodative enough to let them take a few snaps as well. To announce their arrival back in campus the Bismarcians set off a 600 wala (typical of them really) which woke up the entire Bim Street neighbourhood. We Bismarcians never fail to do injustice to being veritably branded ASBs (Attention Seeking Behaviours). Thus, in the end requisite behaviour was displayed and requisite attention sought!!!

FreeKick 2006- The Mega finals finally

August 30th

Finally the day of glory arrived. The stage was all set for a great final between the two best teams of the tournament, Cavaliers Vs Trojans. The spirit was high in both the teams and so was the tension. The teams took to ground at the designated time of 11pm amidst a highly supporting and anxious crowd.
The game got off to a great start with both teams fighting in the mid field for possession of the ball. There were some great moves constructed by Varun Prasad and Prabhkar for the Cavaliers. Jaycee and Vellu tried relentlessly to score goals but were off target. Arun Chacko supported by an injured Elango and the fast Naveen tried very hard for the Trojans. Cavaliers went up 1-0 towards the end of the first half off a corner kick.
In the 2nd half Trojans tried their heart out to go through the defenses of Cavaliers but Sankalan and Vivek held them back with a dedicated effort. Finally the game ended with the Cavaliers winning 1-0 and lifting the Freekick 2006 trophy.

Earlier in the evening Penalty United took on Real Mad-Ride for the 3rd place play-offs.
Penalty United and Real Mad-Ride got off to a great start with both teams trying hard to win the game. Real Mad-Ride tasted first blood when they scored in the first half to go through the defenses of Penalty United. Bhavesh Vikramaditya playing with an injured ankle tried hard to score for Penalty United but all his efforts were in vain.
The defense of Penalty United wasn’t able to withstand the attack of Real Mad-Ride and they scored 2 more goals in the course of the match to win the game 3-0.

The podium standings for Freekick 2006 are as follows:

1st – Cavaliers
2nd- Trojans
3rd- Real Mad-Ride

The success of Freekick 2006 was immense and could be measured by the always jam packed east end gardens, enthusiastic players and supportive administration.
SportsCom put up a great show to conduct such a wonderful tournament and hopefully they would continue to do so.

FreeKick 2006 – The do or die stage, Semi-finals

August 27th

The semi-finals were finally here. Top 2 teams from each group were now playing for a spot in the finals.

The first semifinal was played between Cavaliers and Real Mad-Ride. Cavaliers like before were the favorites to win this game by a decent margin. The game was easy paced compared to the previous games of Cavaliers. Though Real Mad-Ride set some pace to the game in the first half the game slowed down after a one goal lead when Suman found the net for Cavaliers. Suman, Prabhakar, Vellu and Jagdeesh scored for Cavaliers. Jagdeesh is the only goal keeper of the tournament to score a goal. He opened his account with a penalty that Cavaliers won due to a handball committed in the D by Real Mad-Ride. Cavaliers won the game 4-0 and booked a slot for themselves in the final.

The 2nd semifinal of the evening was played between Trojans and Penalty United. The Trojans after their win over Blitzkrieg seemed a little tired. The game was slow and Penalty United tried hard to take advantage of the fatigue factor. Two key players for Trojans, Elango and Mohan Raja were on bench today because of injury. Despite the fatigue factor and absence of players Trojans found the back of the Penalty United defense twice and won the game 2-0. A valiant effort by Bhavesh Vikramaditya’s team saw them win the hearts of the crowd.
With Monday being a rest day the finals and the playoff for the 3rd place would take place on Tuesday 29th August 2006.

GANESH CHATURTI@BIM – THE DIVINE MOODS

It all started from the morning, the pandol, the crowd with the holy urge, Ganesha Himself. Well it was a bit of a strange situation for few as the Sunday mood had taken them to mess at 10 am. Not just because they saw a difference, but guys with kurtas and girls in saris reminded those typical hostellers too. Yes it was a day to kneel, to submit in front the well known Starter of any primary task in this universe. The atmosphere was way too enthusiastic, credits to KALAICOM once again.

Here comes the man who spelt few Hymns of praise for the Elephant-faced divinity as he did all through his life. He started it slowly as the momentum gathered with Aarthi and Aaradhana. Sowmya’s short prayer too reminded the purpose with a strong feeling towards Him. Simple faces turned sages a moment filled with a grace of growing enlightenment. There was a sudden change in the template of the foreheads as a sign of worship. Meanwhile, the smell of ghee and sweetness gathered a current in the pandol. Yes it was the time for Prasad. Few had it more than once typically include the mere trespassers and it taste that took all to heaven for an instant. In a run of concepts and slideshows, yesterday was an odd slide with an even cause. It’s a start, just that. The Holy Idol now waits for a deep bath.

FreeKick 2006 – Day 6, The battle for supremacy…

August 26

Day 6 of FreeKick 2006 was an eventful day with both the matches being played for supremacy in different contexts.

The first match of the evening was between Head Bangers and BIM Bagan. The two minnows of group A played against each other to reign supreme amongst themselves. BIM Bagan being the stronger of the two saw themselves to a 3-0 victory over Head Bangers.

The 2nd match of the evening was probably the best match of the tournament till now. Trojans took on Blitzkrieg late in the night to give themselves a chance to go through to the semi-finals. Blitzkrieg was placed better than Trojans on goal difference in the group even though both the teams had same points. A draw would have been enough for Blitzkrieg to go through but Trojans had to win the game.

The game was fast paced and highly tensed from the word go. Blitzkrieg drew first blood when Giridhar scored direct from a free kick from behind the center line. Arun, the goal keeper of Trojans couldn’t do anything to stop the ball from hitting the back of the net. Giridhar’s goal was easily the best till now. Pushpreet, the goalie of Blitzkrieg kept well to ward off all attempts of Trojan’s forwards to equalize in the first half.
The 2nd half saw Trojans go all out on the attack and after 15 minutes into the game Trojans hit the back of the net. The score 1-1 and tensions were high, another mistake by Blitzkrieg and Trojans would go through and that is what happened. A foul immediately outside the D, saw Chacko flight a superb curling free kick towards the goal which was headed in by one of the Trojan forwards. A Costly miss by the Blitzkrieg goal keeper meant one up lead for the Trojans. Although the goal of Blitzkrieg tried hard to stop the ball from going in but the effort was in vain. Final score was 2-1 in favor Trojans.
With a lot of injury and players not doing well the Trojans pulled off a great victory when mattered. The journey of Blitzkrieg came to an end for FreeKick 2006 and their effort was hugely applauded by one and all.

FreeKick 2006 – The strategic football war wages on….
August 25

Rain gods decided to have mercy on BIM’s inaugural football tournament FreeKick 2006 today. With no downpour coming down the 5th day’s play got under way.

Two matches were to be played today, the first one Cavaliers Vs Head Bangers and the 2nd one Trojans Vs BIM Bagan. Both these games were important for Cavaliers and Trojans as the goal difference would come into play in the group standings.

The 1st match of the evening was played between the mighty Cavaliers and Head Bangers. Cavaliers being one of the hot favorites for the trophy were expected to win with a huge margin. Prabhakar and Vellu supported by Jaycee and Varun found the back of the Head Bangers goal every now and then. Cavaliers lived up to the expectations of the team and the fans and won the game 11-0.

The 2nd match of the evening was played between Trojans and BIM Bagan. Trojans, another favorite for the trophy had to win by a huge goal difference to over take Blitzkrieg in the group standings. Arun Chacko, Thyagu and Naveen tried hard to make sure that the Trojans win by a good margin. BIM Bagan defended well by their own standards and Trojans won the game 8-0.

Trojans were now placed jointly with Blitzkrieg in the group standings and they had to win the next match to go through to the semi-finals.

Derivative Securities Workshop – IREVNA, Chennai

19th and 20th aug

One of the most powerful assets that BIM has built up over the 22 years of its existence has been its alumni network. The alumni family by bringing in its valuable inputs helps in realizing the goals of the institute - the creation, application and dissemination of management knowledge.

Mr. Ragav Bala an 18th batch alumnus (Manager, IREVNA Research services ltd.,) who along with his team from IREVNA Research Services Limited were in campus to conduct a two day workshop on Derivative Securities.

On day 1, Mr.Samoj Panicker (Manager, IREVNA Research services Ltd.) took us into the world of Credit Derivatives and its linkage to the concept of Securitization. Topics covered during his session were Credit Derivative instruments like Credit Default Swaps, Total Return Swaps, Synthetic Financing, Credit Default Options and Collateralized Debt Obligations.

Day 2 saw Mr.Rajiv Kumar (Manager, IREVNA Research services Ltd.,) dealing with more of models like the Black-Scholes Model of Option pricing and also discussed the effects of volatility on the Option pricing. Valuation of Options with Monte Carlo simulation was another highlight of his session.

Concluding the workshops the industry experts expressed their views on Invest Banking and Equity research as a career choice. Students stand to gain a lot from the two days of learning from the industry experts from IREVNA.

Heavy torrential rains lashed BIM today. Two matches scheduled to be played were postponed till the next day due to water logging in the football ground. SportsCom tried hard to dry up the ground but were unsuccessful in their attempt.

Cavaliers Vs Head Bangers and Trojans Vs Bim Bagan would be played on Friday.

FreeKick 2006- The third day’s drama….
August 23

Freekick 2006 continued into the 3rd day with a lot of entertainment for the audience and the players. Prof YLK graced the tournament by being available to watch the proceedings on the 3rd day for a couple of matches.

The 3rd evening began with Penalty United taking on Khaleej United. Manish Bhardawaj made a comeback today and his presence had raised the spirit of the team to a new high. Siddharth Rambadri and Manish Sharma scored for Penalty United. Nabarun and Karthik D tried hard to penetrate Penalty United’s defense but were unsuccessful. The final score was 2-0 in favor of Penalty United.

The 2nd match of the evening was between Marine United and Real Mad-Ride. Two strong teams from group B were seen fighting for glory. Having lost the first match, Marine United had to win this match to book a spot for the semi finals. Real Mad-Ride would have been there with a draw but didn’t take this match lightly and beat Marine United 4-2. The match saw Sir Dharamraj playing for Marine United in the second half.

The next match was between Cavaliers and BIM Bagan. Cavaliers being the favorites for the trophy destroyed the almost non existent defense of BIM Bagan. Prabhakar, Varun Prasad and Vellu hit the back of BIM Bagan’s net very often. Prabhakar scored a whooping 6 goals for the Cavaliers out of their 13. He’s the favorite for the Golden Boot award. Cavaliers won the game 13-0.

The fourth and the last match of the night was played between Blitzkrieg and HeadBangers. Blitzkrieg being another strong contender for the tournament had to win the match by a good margin to maintain a decent goal difference. They got off to a slow start with only 2 goals being scored in the first half. The second half saw a much better and faster performance by Blitzkrieg. Bibek scored an amazing header on a corner kick from Giridhar in his tally of 4 goals. Giridhar the captain scored from the center off a free kick given on a foul against Blitzkrieg. All in all it was a good game with Blitzkrieg winning 10-0.

FreeKick 2006- the second days play…..

August 22

The historic football tournament at BIM continued into the 2nd day with much fanfare. The 2nd evening began early for the teams as SportsCom had to pre-pone the match timings by an hour.

The first match of the evening started at 8pm between Penalty United and Real Mad-Ride. Both the teams were equally matched and it was just about anyone’s guess who would win. Real Mad-Ride took there chances and hit the back of Penalty United’s net twice. Penalty United missed the services of their player Manish Bhardawaj today and the effect was visible in the score line which read 0-2 in Real Mad-Ride’s favor.

The 2nd match of the evening saw Blitzkrieg take on BIM Bagan. It was expected to be a one-sided match with Blitzkrieg being one of the strong favorites for the tournament. Blitzkrieg strikers Shailesh Joshi, Parthiban and captain Giridhar didn’t struck the goal as and when the opportunities were created. The final score was 8-0 with Blitzkrieg winning their first match in the tournament.

Cavaliers Vs Trojans was the 3rd match in the schedule for the 2nd day. Both the teams were equally matched in terms of quality of players, game tactics, stamina etc. The match was fast paced with both teams making fast runs in the opponent’s area to score goals. Sunil Kaushik supported by Diwakar came up with an amazing defensive play for the Trojans. Prabhakar for Cavaliers tried his heart out to score the ever elusive goal. The match ended in a goal less draw.

The final game of the night was played between Marines United and Khaleej United. Both the teams wanted to win this game as they had lost their first game. Khaleej United’s defense which seemed to be non existent on the 1st day put up a great show today as they didn’t allow any penetration by Marines forwards. Nabarun Paul of Khaleej United had a golden chance to put his team in the front when he won a penalty in the 2nd half but the kick taken by him struck the side post and was put out of play without any change to the score line. This game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Students at BIM are known to do something new everytime the routine sets in. This time the SportsCom of BIM 23 along with BIM 22 have organized the first ever an all night match football tournament FreeKick 2006. The tournament began on 21st August 2006 with Prof Ramesh Venkatraman, the chief guest for the kick off. Prof Ramesh Venkatraman stressed how healthy mind in a healthy body is important for future managers.

The tournament has 9 teams participating from PGP I and PGP II. Each team has a squad of 11 players and 8 out of those 11 take to the field. Each half has a duration of 25 minutes. 4 matches were played on the inaugural day at East end gardens football ground.

The first match was between Blitzkrieg and Cavaliers. Easily the most entertaining match with a lot of tension and drama, the match ended in a draw with both teams scoring 4 goals each. The goalkeeper of Blitzkrieg, Pushpreet S Dua opened the yellow card account of the tournament for over-aggression towards the referee. The match was full of events all through the 50 minutes of play.

The 2nd match of the evening was played between Penalty United and Marines United started after a delay of about 1 hour due to a power failure. Thanks to efforts of the EB department of BHEL and the SportsCom the play was possible. Penalty United led by Bhavesh Vikramaditya were down 2 goals for most of the match but came back strongly towards the end of the second half to score 3 magnificent goals in a rush and took the match 3-2.

In the next match that began after midnight saw Trojans taking on the Headbangers. Headbangers who came to the field dressed in formals were sent back to change and come in the sports gear or face disqualification. Arun Chacko, Mohan Raja and Elango of Trojans took apart and destroyed the non existent defense of Headbangers. Arun Chacko scored 6 goals and Mohan Raja scored 4 goals. The final score was 11-0 in favor of Trojans.

The last match of the night that started at 1.45 am was between Real Mad-Ride and Khaleej United. This match also seemed like heading in the same direction as the previous one as Real Mad-Ride kept on finding the back of the goal very often. The defense of Khaleej United was in a confused state not knowing how to stop the forwards of Real Mad-Ride. DJ of Khaleej United struck a superb goal which left Suprabhat the goalie of Real Mad-Ride stunned, sadly it was the only goal for Khaleej United. The final score for this match was Real Mad- Ride beating Khaleej United by 10-1. Almost everyone in the Real Mad-Ride team scored a goal.

Foundation Day Celebration
August 19th

In August 1984, Bharat Ratna Shri. C.Subramanian along with Prof. P.S.ManiSundaram, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University chaired a Meeting of leading academicians and Industrialists and an idea was born. This led to the management institute strategically located at one of India’s Navratna PSUs. That was the genesis of Bharathidasan Institute of Management – School of Excellence.
Twenty-two years down the line, BIM celebrates its Foundation Day as one of the premier business institutes in our country. Padma Bhushan Shri S.Ramadorai, CEO & MD, Tata Consultancy Services, presides the Foundation Day celebrations. Shri Ramadorai has played a key role in building TCS into one of the world’s largest software companies. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of BIM.

Speaking at the 22nd Foundation Day of the BIM, Mr. Ramadorai said innovations and technology breakthroughs of the future were more likely to emerge out of convergence of different disciplines and it was essential that teachers of management, science and technology adopt a multi-disciplinary approach.
"The way managers’ work has changed and will continue to do so. The way we teach should also reflect the change," Mr. Ramadorai, who is also the chairman of the Board of Governors of BIM, said
Besides multi-disciplinary skills, domain expertise, an innovative mindset, global outlook and communication skills were the pre-requisites for future managers.

The budding managers should be "venturesome." Conditions are promising for them. The country's intellectual capital in IT, bio-technology and other cutting-edge disciplines held the key to global leadership. Innovation should have no boundaries. Spotting and optimising opportunities for innovation would yield new enterprises, products and services. Information technology, he said, was at the heart of every domain. The pace of change in IT had given a fresh connotation for newness. The knowledge business was becoming more specialised to suit the needs of end users. The company would consider a suggestion made by Bharathidasan University Vice-Chancellor C. Thangamuthu that the TCS support an MBA programme on technology management at the Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), Mr. Ramadorai said.

BIM Director-General N. Jayasankaran, Director M. Sankaran, Senior Managers from BHEL, also graced the function.

The students were also thrilled to have some of the Alumni members being part of the celebration. Thanks to Raghav Bala, Shanmugavaradan, Rajeshwar, Alagappan and Anuradha for having participated in our celebrations.

Managing Communication in Business

Mr. P.K.C. Bose, MD of Saertex India Ltd., held a workshop on “Managing Communication in Business” at the BIM campus on 17.08.2006. Saertex India Ltd is a subsidiary of Saertex Wagener GmbH & Co. KG Germany.

Mr. Bose, a Wharton - SMU & IIM-A alumnus. He is an eminent Visiting Faculty for leading Business Schools like IIM-A, LIBA, IFMR, University of Economics, Pakistan and many more. He conducts exhaustive consultation programmes for leading Industrial houses and Educational Institutes across Europe and Asia.

Mr. Bose broke the ice with an interactive game which got the students involved and made the learning process practical. He explained the Standard and Inferential models of communication and how subject, sequencing, & situation affect effective communication.

The class proceeded towards Non-Verbal communication cues which indirectly convey the intentions and message. Real life examples of leading business personalities were shown and their communication methods through eye-contact, facial expressions, clothes and accessories, tone of voice, behaviour and actions were analyzed.

The various verbal communication methods were presented followed by the barriers to effective communication. Lack of understanding, knowledge and language, differences in perspective, distraction, self-centeredness, strong emotions, stereotyping errors, lack of interest in others and their impact were brought forth in an innovative way using cartoons and animations.

The real workshop activity started then, situations were simulated with various characteristic cues and students were asked to enact a defined role in right earnest. The situations varied from a CEO addressing a school annual day gathering, to delivering a condolence message. Students actively and enthusiastically participated and enjoyed the simulation games. Their speeches/interactions were recorded and their various verbal communication methods and non-verbal communication expressions were analyzed in depth. The exercise was tailor-made for the students to gain practical insight into effective Business Communication. On the whole it was a highly informative and interactive session which the students of BIM enjoyed.

Inauguration of Book Forum at BIM, Trichy

Bharathidasan Institute of Mangement saw the kickoff of its Book Forum on August 16th. The book forum was inaugurated by the Dr. Prema Nandakumar, a well-known resource person and speaker at various national and international conferences. Prof. S. Sundar, the PGP Chairman of Bharathidasan Institute of Management was also present at the inauguration.

Dr. Nandakumar is an eloquent keynote speaker and draws her inspiration from sources as varied as the Vedas, ancient Hindu, Buddhist and Jain epics, Indian and international literature. She has several published books in the field of criticism, biography, translation, commentary and fiction. She obtained her PhD in 1961, at the age of 22, for her study of Sri Aurobindo's epic poem Savitri which was followed by post-doctoral research work comparing Dante and Sri Aurobindo.

During her inaugural address Dr. Prema Nandakumar expressed her views how literature and management were on identical tracks. She explained how reading a wide variety of books from Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species to Karl Marx’s Das Capital, could give the future managers a wider perspective. Dr. Nandakumar with numerous illustrations from literature kept the audience glued to her talk. Before concluding on her inaugural address she shared her 49 years of experience in the reviewing books.

“Taking up a book with an open mind, facing and entertaining ideas which were against ones belief, entertaining one self by reading and conveying their ideas about the book was important if students were to run the book forum successfully” – Dr. Nandakumar said.
